<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transfer device preventing color shift and transfer misalignment in high precision by a simple process by having a detection subject in a speed variation factor of a belt narrowed. <P>SOLUTION: The transfer device 10 has a constitution in which different color images which are subjected to visualizing process for each of a plurality of latent image carriers are sequentially transferred to a transfer body using a single belt 11 which is wound around a driving roller 72 and a driven roller 73 and passing the positions of respective latent image carriers, or to a recording sheet carried on the belt surface. The transfer device 10 is provided with a speed image pattern detecting means 100 detecting the image pattern for detection of belt speed (position) on the belt 11. The installed position of the speed image pattern detecting means 100 is made to correspond to spacing TL between respective image forming positions and the speed varying periods in the image pattern forming position and the detecting position are matched.
