PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head excellent in the track width control even in narrow track regions, with less side erasing while maintaining the writing property, and its manufacturing method which has less characteristic variations between the magnetic heads obtained from the same wafer. SOLUTION: An insulator layer 2 made of alumina is formed on an AlTiC substrate 1, and a lower yoke part layer 3 is formed on this insulator layer 2. A first magnetic pole part layer 5 is formed on the lower yoke part layer 3, and a nonmagnetic metal recording gap layer 6 is formed on this first magnetic pole part layer 5. A second magnetic pole part layer 7 is formed on the recording gap layer 6. The width and the film thickness of the recording gap layer 6 are kept constant up to a predetermined distance from its medium facing surface, but increased up to another predetermined distance, then kept constant again up to predetermined distance.
