<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable even a PC without a multi-slot-compliant driver to access a desired slot without the installation of a separate dedicated driver. <P>SOLUTION: A card reader/writer 1 has four slots 21 to 24. As a mode in which a PC can access a medium inserted in each slot, a single drive mode in which only a single slot with an inserted medium out of a plurality of the slots is accessible, and a multi-drive mode in which the slots 21 to 24 are accessible individually (independently) are provided, and both can be selectively switched by a changeover switch 15.
