PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To offer a software solution to place graphical images on a page efficiently with a minimal amount of an empty space and a maximum variety of layout designs, and at the same time, refraining from cropping the images received, and minimizing drawback associated with previous graphical placement software. SOLUTION: A method for locating objects by forming a layout of objects in a space comprises step for: generating a tree structure having at least one node and at least one leaf, where each leaf corresponds to one object; characterizing a bounding box for each node in the tree structure wherein the bounding box for each node includes all objects in a sub-tree below the node; and assigning regions in the space for each node in the tree structure in accordance with the bounding box associated with the node.
