<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical pickup device in which a holder for increasing heat dissipating effect to a laser diode can easily and efficiently be installed at an appropriate position after the laser diode is installed at a precise position, the device being compact, light, low in cost, excellent in heat dissipating effect to the laser diode, and maintaining the performance of the laser diode, and improving the durability of the laser diode without increase of parts count. <P>SOLUTION: The holder 5 is formed in a shape with which its inner side almost contacts and covers the stem part 4a of the laser diode 4 for a DVD medium. When the holder is mounted by sliding it in the Z-axis direction, its face 5b facing an optical base 2 abuts the optical base 2 to execute its positioning in the Z-axis direction and make it directly contact the optical base 2. In the inner side of the holder 5, a projection part 5c is formed, which engages with the V-shaped groove 4c of the stem part 4a by sliding in the Z-axis direction.
