<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing device capable of securing the function satisfied by an image mode and having an enhanced functionality even if the function of printing on a medium by the device along is added to a model having a plurality of image quality modes, and a method for printing on a medium. <P>SOLUTION: Prior to performing printing onto a CD-R, a user selects a image quality mode by operating an operating panel section 6. When an operation is made to start printing onto a CD-R from the operating panel section 6, a CPU 16 makes a scanner unit 21 scan a sample CD-R25 to capture the image data therefrom. The CPU 16 processes the image data captured and masks picture elements of the part not requiring printing. An ASIC 20 sends picture element data after image processing to a printer unit 22 for performing printing to the CD-R.
