PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a fatty acid ester based on a branched fatty acid, preferably usable as a solvent for printing inks. SOLUTION: This fatty acid ester is useful as a solvent for printing inks. The fatty acid ester comprises a fatty acid having 12-22C in total as the fatty acid constituent of the ester and a saturated and/or mono- or polyolefinic unsaturated monoalcohol having 1-22C in total as the alcohol constituent of the ester, and further the fatty acid constituent of the ester contains a saturated and/or mono-or polyolefinic unsaturated fatty acid, has a branched structure and is other than isostearic acid.
