摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element which attains a display in a reflective display mode and also in a transmissive display mode. SOLUTION: The display element is provided with: a light scattering modulation layer 11 having a function to modulate a light scattering state; a transparent surface light source layer 14; and an optical intensity modulation layer 12 having a function to modulate light intensity. Preferably, the light scattering modulation layer 11 is a polymer dispersed liquid crystal layer comprising a liquid crystal material dispersed in a polymer material and the optical intensity modulation layer 12 is a guest-host liquid crystal layer including a host liquid crystal and a dichroic dye, being composed of two layers laminated with each other, which comprises an upper layer with three primary color pixels of R, G, B arranged in proximity to one another and a lower layer with three primary color pixels of C, M, Y arranged in proximity to one another, wherein pixels of the upper layer and pixels of the lower layer, seen two-dimensionally, are in the same positions, and further being constructed by lamination in such a way that the color of the upper layer pixel is a complementary color of the color of the directly below lower layer pixel.
