PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a deodorizing method for showing a sufficient deodorizing effect when 4-hydroxy-6-methyl-3-(4-methylpentanoyl)-2-pyrone is used as an effective deodorizing component, and to provide a deodorizing composition used for the method. SOLUTION: The deodorizing method is characterized by heating a mixture of 4-hydroxy-6-methyl-3-(4-methylpentanoyl)-2-pyrone and a certain kind of sugar alcohol such as mannitol, sorbitol, or xylitol. The deodorizing composition is obtained by mixing 4-hydroxy-6-methyl-3-(4-methylpentanoyl)-2-pyrone with the certain kind of sugar alcohol such as mannitol, sorbitol, or xylitol.
