Plant for reducing oxides which are difficult to reduce comprises a rotary furnace having a substantially horizontal axis of rotation which is open at both ends, a burner to provide an oxidizing flame above the reducing zone next to the metallic bath, the hottest part of the flame being at least 1900 DEG C. The burner is positioned at one end of the furnace and a means for discharging the fumes at the other. The burner is supplied with dissociated natural-gas from a natural-gas convertor and oxygen or heavily oxygenated air is blown in therewith. In examples steels and other iron based alloys containing for example Cr, Mn and V, are produced by reduction of suitable oxides and one example relates to the production of zinc from zinc oxide. Reducing agents referred to are carbonaceous, iron alloys, aluminium or silicon.
|
