<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a storage capacity of character pattern data at the time of printing management data or a test print with the use of the character pattern data stored in a printer. <P>SOLUTION: A character pattern is composed of a plurality of basic parts a, b, g, etc. which consist of only segments of different lengths and/or directions. Each character (for example, "A") printable by the printer is formed by one or a combination of the same or different two or more basic parts a, b and g.
