<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recognize a suction state or the like of an electronic component through a simple arrangement using a simple recognition algorithm. <P>SOLUTION: Side faces 12a and 12b of an electronic 12 component are irradiated with illumination light and the light reflected on the side face is received. When the electronic component is rotated about a suction axis, the quantity of received light is varied depending on the rotational angle. Light receiving quantity data from a light receiver dependent on the rotation of the electronic component about the suction axis is prestored and the presence of a suction component, the type of the suction component or the suction attitude of the component are recognized on the basis of a comparison of a signal value indicative of the quantity of received light from the light receiver dependent on the rotation of the electronic component and the stored quantity of received light data.
