PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a treating agent for treating a contaminant etc. which contaminates the environment and exerts a bad influence on human health and to provide a method for easily and surely removing the contaminant. SOLUTION: This substance treating agent consists essentially of the lime obtained by adding salt to limestone and firing the salt-added limestone and has a function of removing the contaminant from the object which is to be treated and contains at least one contaminant selected from colon bacilli, a heavy metal, a volatile organic compound, a phosphorus-containing substance, a nitrogen-containing compound, an aromatic-containing compound and a fluorine compound.
