PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system capable of giving a manager the ability of limiting the visibility of a device to users of a small group. SOLUTION: An IP address filter is resident in an SNMP agent and operated to perform the filtering of an input SNMP packet, thereby limiting the visibility of a printer to users of a small selected group. A management server computer determines the range of IP addresses to either access permission or access rejection. The filter has a reference IP address within the address range selected by the management server computer, and assigns action corresponding to a selected address. The action permits to process the SNMP packet, or rejects and drops the SNMP packet without responding to a transmitter address. To determine whether or not the source address of an input packet is fitted to the reference address, a 32-bit mask is also included in the filter. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
