PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-pressure discharge lamp allowing an outer tube to be easily welded to a discharge vessel, and of restraining abnormal discharge; and to provide a high-pressure discharge lamp lighting device equipped with the high-pressure discharge lamp.

SOLUTION: A metal halide lamp 1 has a discharge vessel 2. The discharge vessel 2 has: a light emitting part 2a having an elongated discharge space; a pair of sealing parts 2b and 2c continued to both ends of the light emitting part 2a; and an exhaust tube part 2d continued to an end on the side opposite to the light emitting part of the sealing part 2b. The cross sections of the sealing parts 2b and 2c are formed into a rectangular shape, and the cross section of the exhaust tube part 2d is formed into an annular shape. The discharge vessel 2 is covered with the outer tube 7. The outer tube 7 has: a non-contact part 7a without contacting the tube part 2d; and welded parts 7b and 7c welded to the discharge vessel 2. The non-contact part 7a includes an end 7d of the outer tube 7. The welding part 7b is positioned on the side of the emitting part 2a relative to the non-contact part 7a and welded to the tube part 2d.
