The integral tubular mouth 11 Fig. 1 (not shown) of a liquefied or compressed gas container 12, e.g. a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher is closed by a plug 10 serving to house a discharge valve 16 and a transverse rod 18 which projects at one or both ends through a hole or holes in the mouth wall and has a discharge bore 19a, 19b, Fig. 3 (not shown) connected to the stepped bore 14 of the valve spindle 17. The plug 10 is retained in the container neck by a plurality of arcuate members 13 and the rod 18 is rotatably mounted and is sealed by ring 24 abutting the outer side of the mouth wall. A spool-shaped end 29 of the rod 18 carries a supporting bracket and together with the other end forms pivots for a forked carrying handle 31. The valve spindle is operated by a lever 33. In a modification the plug 110, Fig. 5 (not shown) is screwed into the neck, the transverse rod is non-rotatable and the valve stem is inclined to the axis and abuts the underside of a flexible dust-proof cap covering the container mouth and which cap transmits movement of the operating lever.
