Under the present invention, an analysis criteria is provided. The criteria identifies computer program components, properties files and a predetermined time period so that specific messages can be identified. Thereafter, desired information is designated. Typical types of desired information include a quantity and an estimated line count for certain types of messages (e.g., newly created, edited and/or deleted). Once this is designated, instances of the types of messages (e.g., specific messages fitting the designated types) will be identified using the analysis criteria, and then analyzed to determine the desired information. The estimated line count can be used to estimate translation costs for the messages.
