PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the cylinder of a gravure printing machine, the long running work of which can be made possible by lessening the exchanging frequency of a doctor knife and of a cylinder and, at the same time, the reduction of costs required for exchanging and for grinding them and the improvement of printing efficiency are contribed by a method wherein the durability of the doctor knife is improved through the development of its uniform wear and the cylinder is used as it is even if the length of the cylinder changes. SOLUTION: A hard plating layer 15 is provided on the outer peripheral surface, on which the printing pattern 14 is formed, of a cylinder main body 13, comprising the cylinder 11 of a gravure printing machine under the condition that the plating layer 15 is applied so as to leave un-plated portions 16 at both the end parts of the cylinder 13.
