A voltage regulator 16 for a generator 14, which may be an alternator with a rectified output, comprises pairs of contacts 31, 32 in series with the field winding 15 of the generator; if the voltage rises above a predetermined value the current in voltage coil 26 causes contacts 32 to open and reduce the field current, whereby the output voltage falls; contacts 31 are similarly responsive to a current coil 25. A clipper diode 34, which may be associated with either the generator or the regulator, is arranged to limit the voltage developed across the contacts and so reduce arcing. The clipper diode, or a Zener diode, may be connected across the field winding of the generator as in Fig. 1, or may be connected together with a fuse across the contacts 31, 32 Fig. 2 (not shown).</p> |
