PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide polybutylene terephthalate which is prevented from molecular weight decrease (intrinsic viscosity decrease) and coloration due to heat degradation during thermal melting, is excellent in hue (a color b value), productivity, heat resistance, mechanical strength, and moldability, and is used for polyester fibers, molded articles, sheets, and films. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing polybutylene terephthalate, the polybutylene terephthalate is brought into contact with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt and/or an alkaline earth metal salt with a concentration of 1 ppm to 10 wt.%.
