<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simply constructed and inexpensive monitor for an optical communication apparatuses which displays with visible light the operating state of a line and the connection state among the ports of the optical communication apparatuses so as to prevent in advance misrecognition and erroneous interruption at maintenance and inspection or the like of the line. <P>SOLUTION: The monitor includes: branching means such as filters 101, 107 for branching part of signal light passing through a coated optical fiber 10 of an optical fiber cable; photoelectric conversion means such as photodiodes 102, 108 for converting the branched signal light into an electric signal; a visible light output means such as a control circuit 104 for outputting visual light in response to the electric signal outputted from the photoelectric conversion means and a visible laser diode 105 or the like; and a display means such as a display section 120B for carrying out lighting display with the visible light.
