PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having excellent durability, whereby high density recording is performed. SOLUTION: This medium is provided with: a plurality of ferromagnetic dots 6 arranged separately on a soft magnetic layer 4 formed on a non-magnetic substrate 2; and a carbon layer 8 which is formed on respective ferromagnetic dots and has a smooth cross sectional film surface shape through the center of the ferromagnetic dot, and the film thickness of which decreases gradually toward an outer circumference from the center of the ferromagnetic dot.
