PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve brightness of a liquid crystal display by suitably setting a liquid crystal capacitor C<SB>LC</SB>, an element capacitor C<SB>TFD</SB>and a VT characteristic. SOLUTION: In a liquid crystal device 1, a data signal sent to a data line 3 is supplied to a pixel electrode 19 via a thin film diode 6 based on a scanning signal sent to a scanning line. In the liquid crystal device 1, the element capacitor C<SB>TFD</SB>of the thin film diode 6 corresponding to one of the pixel electrode 19 and the liquid crystal capacitor C<SB>LC</SB>of the liquid crystal disposed on a position opposite to the pixel electrode 19 are set based on a voltage-transmittance characteristic of a liquid crystal 4. To be more specific, when the element capacitor of the thin film diode 6 is represented by C<SB>TFD</SB>, the liquid crystal capacitor is represented by C<SB>LC</SB>, a data amplitude voltage of the data signal is represented by Vd and a voltage corresponding to 50% transmittance in the voltage-transmittance characteristic of the liquid crystal 4 is represented by V<SB>(T50)</SB>, the capacitors are set to satisfy an inequality äC<SB>TFD</SB>/(C<SB>LC</SB>+C<SB>TFD</SB>)}×Vd<V<SB>(T50)</SB>.
