PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thread braking device for giving braking force to a thread supplied to a knitting machine, extending a holding means and a shaft in the longitudinal direction, and enabling adjustment of braking force by an ordinary spring mechanism as well as reduction of danger of occurrence of stain. SOLUTION: This thread braking device is constituted in such a way that an assembly section is arranged in the holding means so as to move in the axial direction, a spring gives energizing force toward the opposite side to a side where a support section exists in the axial direction for the assembly section, a pretension providing mechanism is provided with an adjustment/protection member, and the adjustment/protection member is arranged in the holding means so as to move in the axial direction, thereby storing the assmbly section and the spring.
