<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery capable of using any nonaqueous solvent without limitation, having a negative electrode containing carbon on which, electrochemical decomposition of the nonaqueous electrolyte is restrained. <P>SOLUTION: The negative electrode contains carbonaceous material like graphite, hard carbon, or coke. Metallic lithium, lithium alloy, silicon, or carbon fluoride or the like can be used as a positive electrode. The nonaqueous electrolyte contains magnesium salt. imide salt such as magnesium bistrifluoromethanesulfonylimide (Mg[(CF<SB>3</SB>SO<SB>2</SB>)<SB>2</SB>N]<SB>2</SB>)Mg((CF<SB>3</SB>SO<SB>2</SB>)<SB>2</SB>N)<SB>2</SB>or a sulfonate salt is used as the magnesium salt of the nonaqueous electrolyte.
