1,087,251. Chucks. JACOBS MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 29, 1964 [Jan. 3, 1964], No. 44141/64. Headings B3B and B3C. A tool comprises a spindle 22 carrying a chuck, and a collar 72 axially movable on the chuck to engage a stationary part to lock the spindle. The tool is powered by an electric or pneumatic motor. The shaft 22 is threaded to carry the chuck body 25 which is threaded to engage teeth on the jaws 32. A sleeve 33 and a nose-cone 43 are manually rotated as a unit on balls 37 to cause the jaws to move in inclined paths to clamp a workpiece, the jaws being guided by ways in a sliding plastic or aluminium member 57. To take up clearances in the clamping members, lugs 68 on the member 57 are crushable against the inner surface of the sleeve 33. While the sleeve 33 is being rotated, the spindle 22 is locked by moving the collar 72 along a squared shank 25, against a spring 76, to engage lugs 74 thereon with recesses (75) in the tool casing 20. The collar 72 can be slid rearwardly and the sleeve 33 rotated by one hand while the power tool is held in the other. In a modification, the collar consists of a plastic body containing a metal insert bearing the lugs. |
