PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a position detector using GPS signals and a position detection method for efficiently performing position detection in a short time at power-on. SOLUTION: A GPS receiver 10 comprises: an RF reception part 14 for receiving GPS signals including satellite distinction data, almanac data, and ephemeris data for distinguishing GPS satellites; a position detection means for performing position detection based on the GPS signals; a backup memory 20 for storing therein, when power is turned off, the satellite distinction data, the almanac data, and the ephemeris data for distinguishing GPS satellites, which have been observable; and a determination means for performing comparison as to whether GPS satellites observable at power-on agree with GPS satellites distinguished based on the distinction data stored in the backup memory 20, and determining that the almanac data and the ephemeris data stored in the backup memory are effective when agreement takes place.
