Plastic monofilaments that are capable of molecular reorientation when heated and stressed are used to make a strand, rope or core that is subsequently subjected to axial tension, radial compression and heat whereby to compact the monofilaments and deform their cross sections into closely interfitting shapes forming a symmetrical geometric pattern. The compacting of the monofilaments may take place in a single or a plurality of stages. There may be a first stage of compaction effected without appreciable reduction of the cross sectional areas of the monofilaments and second and third stages of compaction in each of which there is a reduction in the cross-sectional area of the strand. The heat referred to may be provided by circulating hot lubricating fluid around the strand and the compacted strand may be passed through an aqueous ageing bath. A strand according to the invention may be twisted from alternate monofilaments of nylon and polythene and then processed as described above. Such a strand, rope or core, is stated to have improved flexibility, buoyancy and will be largely self-lubricating. An apparatus for making and compacting the strand rope or core is described. |
