The present invention is an ecological method for treating municipal waste water by surface flow artificial swamps, which main purpose is to transform in a natural manner pollutants contained in the water by physical mechanisms such as: separation of dirt, sand and solids of large size, sedimentation of suspended solids, separation of the original flow into two streams: the first stream being rich in solids and treated in a sludge cell, and the second stream being clarified and treated in purifying cells, as well as aerated and sludge degraded, said sludge being settled in the inlet section of the purifying cells surface and degraded by means of an aeolian-solar aerator, the same carrying out the oxygenation an degradation of the solids settled in the entrance section that leads to a platform for planting swampy plants in the purifying cells; chemical mechanisms such as: decrease in the concentration of pollutants by means of the sun and plants coaction -a biological mesh formed by st ems-, transfer of oxygen from leaves and stems to the roots zone so that the organic matter is oxygenated; and biological mechanisms such as: digestion of pathogens contained in the water and resulting from typical microorganisms of the swamp habitat, rupture of the cell wall of the pathogen organisms contained in the water by means of solar radiation exposure. The aforementioned mechanisms are carried out in a simultaneous and sequential manner while the water is flowing in the system, the same being actuated by elements such as the design hydraulic system which ensures the laminar flow of the water to prevail through the system, the solar radiation incidence which is carried out practically the whole year, an average ambient temperature, which is higher than 10 degree C in the coolest month, the growth of the swamp vegetation planted in the treating cells, said vegetation being responsible to process the nutrients of the waste water, as well as the lack of intermediate lagoons in the purif ying cells.
