A frequency-controlled system 100 for illuminating lighting elements 106, 108, 110, eg LEDs, in one or more predetermined patterns includes a motion switch 102, a controller 104, a sound generator 340, and lighting elements 106, 108, 110. The motion switch 102 creates an activation signal in response to movement, which is detected by the controller 104. The controller 104 illuminates the lighting elements 106, 108, 110 in one or more predetermined patterns according to the frequency and duration of pulses in the activation signal. The sound generator 340 may also be actuated. The lighting system 100 preferably utilises at least two integrated circuits, where a first integrated circuit functions as the controller 104 and the second integrated circuit functions as the sound generator 340. Preferably, the sound generator 340 has a higher cutoff voltage than the controller 104 so that the controller 104 can continue to function even when the battery voltage drops below the cutoff voltage of the sound generator 340. The system 100 is suitable for use in shoes, safety vests, barrettes, headbands, bracelets, and other personal articles.
