In an optical transmission system, employing an RZ modulation scheme to an optical signal carrying a data signal (D) having a data rate B, the operating point of a Mach-Zehnder device (MZM2) biased at a quadrature bias point is controlled by monitoring a frequency line in the output signal of the device (MZM2) at a frequency of B/2, i.e., at a value of half the data rate modulated to the optical signal, and by adjusting the bias voltage (UB) of the device (MZM2) to drive the intensity of this line to a minimum.

|
