A message generation mechanism (70) for a network interface (72) is provided. The message generation mechanism (70) is operable to generate a message which includes data for signing and authentication procedure instructions. The message is for conveying information to a user device (62) for presentation to a user via a user interface (80) of the user device (62). The data is arranged in the message in a manner which permits the user device (62) to utilise the data in an automated signing procedure (82). The automated signing procedure (82) may be a digital signing procedure (82). The data for signing may be random data, pseudo-random data or secure random data and may be arranged in the message in a manner which avoids presentation to the user. The authentication procedure instructions (90 are implementable by the user device (62) to effect automatic initiation of the automated signing procedure (82). The authentication procedure instructions may also effect automatic return of the signed data from the user device (62). In one embodiment the message is written in a markup language, such as HTML, and the authentication procedure instructions (90) are written in a script language, such as JavaScript.
