An apparatus and method for transporting a downhole tool in a borehole. A phase change material such as a shape memory metal is activated to enga ge the borehole and to transport the tool through the borehole. After the tool has been advanced in the borehole, the phase change material is deactivated to release from the borehole wall, and advances into position to continue the transport process. An extension can be engaged with the phase change material to extend the movement range of the phase change material. The phase change material actuator requires few moving parts and can be integrat ed with other tool components. The invention can operate in opposite directions within a borehole and can replace wellbore tractors and other locomotive tools.
