Tricyclic and heterocyclic derivatives represented by the following general formula (I) and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof; a process for producing the same; and drugs containing the same as the active ingredient: (I) wherein W, X and Y represent each carbon or nitrogen; U and Z represent each CR2, NR13, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, etc.; the ring A represents a carbon ring or a heterocycle; R1 represents alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, NR4R5, OR6, etc.; and R3 represents a carbon ring or a heterocycle. Because of having a corticotropin release factor receptor antagonism, the compounds represented by the general formula (I) are useful in preventing and/or treating depression, anxiety, eating disorder, post-traumatic stress, digestive ulcer, irritable bowel syndrome, Alzheimer s disease, alcoholic or drug withdrawal, etc.
