<PICT:1117696/C6-C7/1> Components such as crank-shafts which have highly stressed parts joined to shoulders by fillets and which require to be aligned following surface hardening of the stressed parts are hardened in such a way that a hardened zone is developed which is dished in longitudinal section, the zone depth decreasing towards the shoulders and merging into the fillets. As shown in Fig. 2 the boundary 15 of hardened zone 14 merges tangentially into fillet 13 at point 16 such that angle 17 between the normal to the tangent at point 16 and the normal to the surface of the hardened zone is about 15 degrees. The hardening may be carried out either by flame or induction hardening; in the latter case the inductor may be so constructed that the current density diminishes towards its ends. |
