A sensor signal for a known pre-determined road gradient is stored in the memory as a reference value (15) and this value is continuously updated during driving by compensating for an angle difference (s16) between the vehicle bodywork and the road, based on information concerning vehicle geometry and the position of the suspension system in the vehicle, then calculating the average road gradient (s19) over a pre-determined route trajectory and then updating the reference value if the average gradient is not equal to zero.
