[Also in Division C7] The invention comprises a rechargeable cell having a high available energy per unit weight comprising an aqueous electrolyte, an anode made from a metal having a solubility and electrochemical potential less than that of zinc, immersed in the electrolyte and a cathode which is permeable to air and oxygen but impermeable to electrolyte, having one surface in contact with the electrolyte, the external surface area of the anode, neglecting the pores, being at least equal to that of the cathode and the total surface area including the pores being at least 10 times that of the cathode. The electrolyte may be a 5-50% aqueous solution of NaOH, KOH, LiOH, H 3 PO 4 , H 2 SO 4 , HNO 3 or HCl. It may be circulated round the cell. The anode may be a nickel grid coated with cadmium, cobalt, iron, vanadium, chromium or tungsten of total thickness up to 100 mils. The active material may be electroplated from a solution of the metal nitrate. The cathode may be a nickel or tantalum grid carrying a Pt black catalyst suspended in a synthetic resin. The catalyst may be extended with carbon black, boron carbide or titanium carbide. The cathode may be up to 25 mils thick. In a particular embodiment (Fig. 1), cathodes K are in contact with air on their outer faces and electrolyte on their inner. Anodes A dip into the electrolyte. In Fig. 2 anode A1 is contained in support 9 and cathode K1 is attached to support 7. 7 and 9 are separated by rubber ring 10 and the space between the electrodes is filled with electrolyte. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the anode is a cylinder having a number of passages passing through it parallel with its axis. It is immersed in a circular pool of electrolyte bounded by an annular air cathode.
