Continuous material (4) is steam treated in a chamber (1) where steam is circulated under positive pressure. The material enters through an inlet slot (2) which is preceded by a lock where steam is blown (12) on to the material (4), preferably at a speed of 20 to 40 m/sec. The material (4) runs horizontally and the lock can include suction (16) and hot air blowing (15). An Independent claim is also included for steam treatment equipment with a lock at the inlet slot (2), incorporating a steam chamber (12) with jet manifold and steam supply (17). An initial air chamber (15) where hot air is blown on the material and a suction chamber (16) for removing exhaust steam is also fitted.
