A soiling monitoring apparatus (31) detects soiled portion of roll surface of set of rolls (50). A control system (41) operates cleaning device (40) based on output of monitoring apparatus, so that cleaning device performs cleaning until it is detected that the soiling has been removed completely. Soiling is detected by measurement based on laser variation and/or based on vibration measurement or by CCD camera. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a method of maintaining the surface of a roll of a paper or board processing machine; and (b) the equipment for cleaning rolls of a paper or board processing machine.
