<p>A process for producing solid copolymers of ethylene and alkyl acrylates containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms in the alkyl radical comprises heating, at a temperature from 100 DEG to 350 DEG C. and under a pressure of 15,000 to 100,000 p.s.i. in the presence of a free radical catalyst, a polymerizable mixture comprising (a) ethylene; (b) 0,05 to 1,5 mols of at least one alkyl acrylate per 100 mols of ethylene and (c) as chain terminator a saturated aliphatic ketone containing 3 to 11 carbon atoms, an alkanol containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms or a 1-olefin containing 3 to 10 carbon atoms. Specified alkyl acrylates are ethyl, propyl, pentyl, 2-ethylhexyl and decyl acrylates. Specified chain terminators are acetone, diethyl ketone, diamyl ketone, diisobutyl ketone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isopropyl ketone, ethyl butyl ketone, methyl sec. butyl ketone, ethylpropyl ketone, diisoamyl ketone, methyl n-hexyl ketone, methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, n-butanol, isobutanol, sec. butanol, pentanol, 3-methylbutanol-1, hexanol, octanol, propylene, butene-1, 2-methylbutene-1, pentene-1, 3-methylpentene-1, 4, 4-dimethylpenten-1, hexene-1 and octene-1. The catalyst may be oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, persuccinic acid, lauroyl peroxide, dipropionyl peroxide, butyryl peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, acetyl peroxide, peracetic acid, di-tert. butyl peroxide, tert. butyl hydroperoxide, hydroxyheptyl peroxide, alkali metal persulphates, perbonates and percarbonates, and diisopropyl peroxydicarbonate. Commercial ethylene containing small amounts of acetylene, ethane, propane and carbon dioxide may be used. The process may be effected batchwise or continuously.</p> |
