[Also in Division B6] A plurality of tapes 6 are fed simultaneously past a row of photo-cells 44 each of which provides an output only if all the tapes are perforated in the corresponding position within the row. Each tape 6 may correspond to a particular characteristic, e.g. ailment or symptom, and each perforation corresponds to a case history with that characteristic. The case histories are numbered, and each row on the tape corresponds to a group of 10 consecutive case histories. A mechanical counter is coupled to the same drive as sprocket wheels 36 and comprises type wheels which correspond to the digits necessary to identify each row on the tapes. A further printing device is settable by the outputs from photo-cells 44 in accordance with the units digit or digits necessary to identify one or more positions within a row. Platens for both printing devices are actuated by solenoids when any one of photo-cells 44 produces an output, so as to record the identity of any case history which has the particular combination of characteristics represented by the tapes 6. A circuit, Fig. 7 (not shown) is described whereby the outputs of photo-cells 44 are scanned in sequence to operate an electronic counter which thus registers the total number of case histories with the selected combination of characteristics. It is stated that the apparatus may be used to obtain a printout from a single tape.
