<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a line head which can cope even with a situation such as a decrease in brightness of a light-emitting diode, caused by long-time use, and an image forming apparatus using the line head. <P>SOLUTION: Four light-emitting diode lines 1a-1d on are formed in the line head in a subscanning direction. During the time of 0 to tx, each light-emitting diode of the line 1a is turned on, and each light-emitting diode of the lines 1b-1d is not turned on. At the time tx, the line 1a is turned off and the line 1b is turned on so that the line 1b can be turned on. After that, at a time ty, the line 1b is put off, and the line 1c is put on so that the line 1c can be turned on.
