PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inkjet recording apparatus and a discharge fault detecting method which quickly detect a discharge fault of a nozzle such as non-discharge of ink, and correct the poorly discharging nozzle. SOLUTION: Test patterns in respective colors are printed by respective print heads 12 in a test printing area of a recording sheet 16. The test patterns are read with sensors 41 provided just behind the respective print heads 12, and a poorly discharging nozzle in the print heads 12 is detected with the images. When the poorly discharging nozzle is detected, an image correction and a recovery operation of the poorly discharging nozzle are made. Thus, the poorly discharging is detected immediately after printing, which enables an early aid for the image. The poorly discharging nozzle is detected in such a way that the sensors 41 are disposed opposite to the print heads 12 respectively, a test printing is carried out between a current practical printing and the next practical printing, and an image formed in the test printing is read out with a sensor 41. When the poorly discharging nozzle is detected in the test printing, its correction is applicable to the first practical image thereafter. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
