Insecticidal and insect sterilant compositions comprise as the active ingredient the antibiotic porfiromycin and a solid or liquid carrier. The carrier may comprise an insect nutriment or food, e.g. granulated corn meal, bran, pomace, granulated sugar, corn syrup, honey or molasses; carbohydrates, e.g. sugars (such as lactose, sucrose, fructose or glucose), starches, dextrins or pectins; proteins or degradation products thereof such as egg albumen, meats, soybean oil meal, cottage cheese, proteoses, peptones, peptides or powdered milk or egg; and an insect attractant, e.g. sec-butyl-6-methyl-3-cyclohexene-1-carboxylate, sec-butyl-4- (or 5)-chloro - 6 - methyl - cyclohexanecarboxylate, methyleugenol, 4-(p-acetoxyphenyl)-2-butanone and anisylacetone, may also be present. The compositions may be in the form of aqueous or organic solutions, e.g. in methanol, ethanol, acetone or ethylene dichloride; dusts also containing a dusting powder; aqueous spray formulation comprising a wetting agent and/or spreading agent, dispersing agent, sticker or adhesive; wettable powder suitable for dispersing in an aqueous vehicle containing a surfactant and dusting powder; concentrated organic solutions in acetone, ethylacetate, dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide, dimethyl sulphoxide, acetonitrile or cyclohexanone, and emulsifiable concentrates also containing surfactants. Harmful insect pests are combatted by bringing porfiromycin or a composition thereof into contact with said insects or their environment.
