PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image scanner that is capable of preventing trouble caused by moving a carriage during no use, and is easily handled. SOLUTION: The image scanner comprises: a transparent original platen for placing an original thereon; an image pickup part for generating image data representing the original placed on the original platen; a carriage that is moved parallel with a panel surface of the original platen to move a scan line of the image pickup part; a housing wherein the carriage is housed; a connector connected to a plug of an external cable; a restriction means capable of being transient to a first state of restricting the carriage in a predetermined position and a second state of opening the carriage; and a control means for making the restriction means transient to the first state while the plug is not connected to the connector or for making the restriction means transient to the second state while the plug is connected to the connector.
