[Also in Division F4] A device for drying ink on printed sheets from a printing machine 1 comprises a vertical conveyer in which two separate pairs of chain conveyers (9, 10), Fig. 2 (not shown), each carry grippers 12, 14 respectively for the leading and trailing edges of the sheets. The sheets are heated by hot air in a heating unit 39 as they travel upwardly and cooled by cold air in a cooling unit 45 as they travel downwardly. The cold air may be humidified to replenish the water content of the sheets. After leaving the drying device, the sheets are further cooled by water-cooled rollers 46, 48 and the non- printed or dry sides of the sheets are moistened by sprays 50, 51. The sheets are conveyed faceupwardly to a laying-out table 49 by a conveyer 38. Guide bars 40 support the sheets as they pass through the heating and cooling units 39, 45. Each conveyer (9, 10) comprises two chains driven by sprocket gears, e.g. 17, on common axles, the gears (15-18), Figs. 3-5 (not shown), driving the outer conveyer (9) being disengageable from their axles to effect adjustment of the separation of the grippers 12, 14 in order to accommodate different sheet lengths. The heating and cooling units are separated by an insulating partition 68. |
