The venting method involves carrying out a venting operation by holding an injection valve (2) between the fuel injection line (1) and a cylinder of the engine open during a working cycle of the internal combustion engine for a longer period than the period required to supply fuel to the cylinder when it is full with fuel. The valve is held open over a crankshaft angle interval of at least 180 degrees, preferably at least 300 degrees. An independent claim is also included for an engine controller for controlling internal combustion engine injection valve opening and closing.
