An image pickup device includes: an index value calculation circuit (16) for extracting an index value for predicting a code amount when compressed from a video signal obtained from a solid state image sensor (11); and a compression coefficient control circuit (17) for controlling a compression coefficient used in an image compression section (18) according to the index value obtained by the index value calculation circuit (16). By using the index value obtained by the index value calculation circuit (16) during pickup image check operation before pickup, the compression coefficient control circuit (17) determines the compression coefficient during pickup operation.
