PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which suppresses deterioration in quality of image by making correction on the tilt of a polygon mirror face in the main scanning direction with specifying the polarizing face of the polygon mirror. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with an obliquely incident optical system. In addition, an SOS sensor 51 and a face tilt sensor 52 obliquely arranged to the SOS sensor 51 are provided. An output lag between the SOS sensor 51 and the face tilt sensor 52 is sampled. The amount of tilt on every polarizing face is detected. Then, data table for the correction value in the main scanning direction is referred to based on the time lag. In addition, the polarizing face of the polygon mirror is specified from count value of an SOS signal.
