PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make high-density recording possible by additional micronizaion of a vertical magnetic recording layer. SOLUTION: The vertical magnetic recording medium 10 is formed by successively laminating at least a nonmagnetic underlayer 2, a vertical magnetic layer 3 and a protective layer 4 on a nonmagnetic substrate 1. The vertical magnetic layer is composed of a ferromagnetic crystal grain and a nonmagnetic crystalline grain boundary phase and the crystalline grain boundary phase is composed of two or more oxides.
